My sentimental pick for 2008 Open Champion - Jean Van de Velde

By virtue of making a birdie on the final hole at the Hillside course during Open qualifying, Jean Van de Velde will play in the 2008 British Open. In a year with no particular favorite, perhaps Van de Velde can muster some of the magic that he had in 1999. I would love to see him on the 18th tee this Sunday at Royal Birkdale with a three shot lead. Sure it's a long shot, but who would have predicted that Rocco Mediate would go toe to toe with Tiger at the US Open?

That certainly would be a long shot Mo. Can't even imagine it would happen though. i reckon that Garcia is going to pull this one off. Spain is on a real high at the moment with Nadal winning Wimblelton and the Spanish soccer team winning teh Earopean Cup. Garcia will be wanting his share of fame and glory. plus he is putting better this year and will want to make up for last year's debacle.

personally I would dislike it if he won, but at least he wouldn't be able to say that he beat Tiger.

Mo, you have inspired me to place 10 bucks on Van de Velde.  If he wins - I'll buy you dinner!

Finished at +4, with the cut looking like +8 and the leader at even, I think he is right where he needs to be. With the winds expevcting to be even more brutal on the weekend, I think it gives him an advantage. As I said before, he played arguably the most difficult course in the Open magnificently for 71 holes in pretty brutal conditions. He is still a long, long shot, but who knows when Karma is involved?

I was just at the Open site and the cut is +10.

Paul Goydos did not make the cut with +12.

John Daly finished dead last at +29 with 80 89.  Put a fork in this guy's golf career - it's done.

Go Van de Velde (+4 and tied for 16)!!

Tough day today. Jean is +6 after 9 holes. Unfortunately the players starting later are catching the brunt of the wind, but still tied for 27th. Not bad after having disappeared for several years. Although it looks like KJ Cjoi may be tough to beat. still the only man under par.
