a couple of times i mentioned on the board that i would be following in the footsteps of our moderator donnakay and volunteer at a professional golf tournament. last year i decided it would be the pga championship at oakland hills. i am being assigned to the merchandise tent and this week i received my work schedule.
needless to say i was very pleased. ultimately the goal of volunteering is to enable tournaments to donate to charity, of which i am grateful for the opportunity. i am excited and also a bit nervous, not knowing what to expect. hopefully i'll be able to use what skills i've acquired over the years to help the tournament in any way i can. i appreciate the tournament being generous in their scheduling.
i don't know if you'd agree with this donnakay, but from my first experience with this, allow yourself to be as available to the tournament as you can, don't try to pick and choose when you want to work. i ended up having two full practice days and the final tournament day to myself. i will be working the early shift thursday, the late shift tuesday, and midshifts on friday and saturday. i see it being a very fulfilling tournament from both the work side and the watching golf side.
i don't know if i'll be able to blog, unless the hotel has a computer onsite for public use. but i will post a summary of the tournament from my perspective sometime after.
